The Pre-Derby seminar on
Friday night was a huge
success and the prizes
(donated by our
Sponsors) were the best
ever. And on Derby Day,
because the weather was
so great and warm to
boot, the water temp
was up to 50˚ + compared
to a chilly 47˚
last year.
The result... the best
catch ratio since the
Derby started eight
years ago! There
were 41 legal-sized Sturgeon
caught (for 350 anglers)
for a catch ratio of
11.71%. In
addition, there were 5
oversize fish caught and released.
Perhaps more impressive,
there were 95 calls
dispatching weighmasters
to measure fish!

With 350 entries at $25,
this year's purse
totaled $8.750.00, all
of which went back to
the winners (1st through
7th places). The 1st
place winner was Paul
Koval ("The Rev") of San
Andreas (photo above), who
caught
and released a 56"
Sturgeon. Paul
took home a cool
$3.062.50, and a first
place laser-cut marble
trophy created and
donated by Captain Sean
Treacy of
SF Bay Sportfishing.
Sean made trophies for
1st, 2nd and 3rd place
for Adults and a 1st
place for the Kid's
Division.
The
2nd place winner was Mike Rael
of Vacaville (photo
below), whose prize totaled
$2,187.50. 3rd Place went
to Lyle McDonald of Cameron Park
(photo below) who took home
$1,750.00. Both Mike and
Lyle also received trophies as
well. The
last four places each
took home $437.50: Jerry
Brannon of Livermore (4th);
Darren Nichols of Vacaville
(5th); Hugh Marchand of Stockton
(6th); and Jerry Borehers of

RESULTS - KID'S DIVISION |
|
We had a great group of
kids again this year
from ages 3 to 15, the
biggest yet . There were
81 kids fishing on boats
and 50 kids fishing in
our Pier Program!
All 131 kids were
entered (for free) in
the Derby, up from 101
last year, a 30%
increase! In
order to win a prize,
all kids had to do was
catch a fish, any
species, any size!
Their catch earned them
a ticket for the top prize
drawing. Many of
the kids actually caught
Sturgeon, and three
caught oversized
Sturgeon!
This was the second year
for the "Pier
Fishing"
program for the Kid's
Division. We had 50 kids
fishing from Martinez
Pier this year (compared
to 8 kids last year).
The Derby supplied
tackle and instruction
and assistance for all
the kids!!! For kids who couldn't
otherwise fish in the
Derby, two of the
Captains donated their
boats to take kids (and
their parents) out to
fish for FREE:
Captain Steve Talmadge
(Flash Fishing) and
Captain Don Franklin (Soleman
Sportfishing).
The awards for kids
started with a drawing.
Each kid who caught and
released a fish (any
size/species) received a
ticket for the drawing.
15 names were drawn and
each of these kids
received a top prize
(which included custom
fishing rods, accurate reels, and
rod/reel combos. All 131
kids took home a special
"WINNER Kid's Division"
Derby Tshirt donated by
Coastside Fishing Club
as well as some goody
bags, .
The anticipation on
their faces as they
awaited the call of
their number was
priceless, as was the
pride and admiration on
the faces of parents. Photo below with

Not pictured in the
group photo below was
4th place winner, Kayle
"Peanut" Balke who was
late to the awards as
their boat had to be
towed to Pittsburg.
Her individual photo is

Following the drawing of
tickets, Captain Steve
Talmadge called up all
the kids . All
of these kids received a
prize and special Derby
shirt. Thanks to the generosity
of our many sponsors,
supplemented by raffle
ticket proceeds, every
kid went home with a

Truly a special event,
sure to become a lasting
